Illegal levies collection: Govt vows to deal with violators
This was made known yesterday by the Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor, Hon Patrick Obahiagbon when crowd of commercial bus drivers from Ekiosa and Ring Road motor parks in Benin City led a protest to Government House to intimate the Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on the outright disregard of its ban on the illegal levies and rates.
Throwing more light on the statement earlier made on the issue by the Secretary to the state Government, Prof Julius lhonvbere, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon stressed that Akugbe Ventures remains the only body authorized to collect personal income tax from road transport workers on behalf of the state government, adding that levies and rates earlier collected from road transport workers by Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, National Union of Road Transport Workers and others remain banned.
The chief of Staff said that anyone who flouts government directive is aiming to test the capacity of the state government to enforce its rules and decisions and as such the culprits would face the wrath of the law.
Condemning the defaulters, Obahiagbon said thus; ‘They are testing the resolve and capacity of the Edo State Government to enforce its rules and decisions. Don’t take laws into your hands because the government can implement its rules and decisions.”
Earlier, the spokesman of the protesters, Mr. Victor Edusa said they were beaten up yesterday morning when they refused to pay the levies and rates banned by the government.
